Daily Record Pulls Irish Distribution - Who's Next?

iLevel.ie have analysis of the September 2014 ABC numbers here.
I just got the heads up from Vincent Jennings, Chief Executive Officer of CSNA. He informs me that as of Saturday 11th, the Daily Record will no longer be available in the Republic. Seemingly the logistics of getting the papers to the Republic each day was becoming arduous and on daily sales of about 500 copies per day it probably makes economic sense.

Can't imagine the UK Independent - though it's a decent paper - sells many copies in Ireland. So I'd probably go for them next.

Edit: oops, looks like it already has been pulled, as there are no figures alongside it in the link.

I thought they'd announced they'd do that and replace it with the I instead

Is the British version of The Star still sold here?

UK Independent has already been pulled. UK edition of the Daily Star is not sold here.

Sunday Post would seem to be the lowest hanging fruit but at a lot of other newspapers are moving close to the no-longer-worth-it danger zone.

Sunday Post is very regional - although, so was the Record. Border counties and particularly Donegal go for it more than others. Should keep distribution costs in check if they limit it to a few counties

I'm actually astounded by how strong the Sunday Mirror and the People figures are still

Actually my money would be on The People. Their Editorial and the Mirrors have merged of late and the Irish Edition constituting only 4% of their overall figure it would seem like too much hard work.

But figures are deceptive and we've bee down this road before. The example of the guardian - sales on Saturday much higher than M-F and the price is higher as well - anyway. They turnover (at the till) €2.1m p.a on an average daily sale of 2,826!

But the People isn't in the boat. Their one saving grace is that they print here so that cuts out an element of the costs.

And something I didn't add to the post - the Record sister paper - The Sunday Mail is staying (800 copies roughly). They probably print earlier and can ship in time to be distributed with the other National papers

The Daily Express could be next.

Richard Desmond / Northern & Shell are in cost cutting mode. 200 jobs are going at the Express and the operation is being cut back to the bear bones.

They pulled the 'i' out of Ireland shortly afterwards.

Looks like my extremely well-thought out and researched suggestion in the other thread has been borne out, in case anyone thought I was talking off the top of my head!:p

Some of those year-on-year falls in September are pretty shocking, Sunday Telegraph, Observer down 13-14%. From my very well-informed POV, I reckon the Express/Sunday Express might be a good shout on the next one to go Szero.
