Using a phone with a HRM

I'm only beginning running but I like the idea of using my android phone with a HRM. I'm considering the Polar FT60 which seems to be a watch and a chest strap.

From what I've read the chest strap is a more reliable source of heart rate info, better than the watch.

Question is, if I buy the FT60 am I essentially wasting money on the watch part of it, can the chest strap work directly with my phone and give me more info than the watch (GPS etc.) though the various apps (runkeeper, strava etc.)?

I already use some of those apps so maybe I'm wasting money on the watch, or maybe the watch + phone + chest strap combo is not feasible and most people use only one or two of them?

    Any tips appreciated.

Been using one of these for a few weeks. The chest strap cuts me like cheese wire so I decided to get one of these. If your phone supports bluetooth smart then it will work. http://www.bluetooth.com/Pages/Bluetooth-Smart-Devices-List.aspx

Advantage of watch & strap is you get real time information as you run, I use Polar FT4 , don't notice the strap tbh

In terms of real time info, do the apps not give you that as well? I mean in terms of telling you that you're in zone 1 or something as far as heart rate is concerned. I saw that the watch does but I run with headphones so I thought maybe the app might beep or tell me when I'm in the optimal zone or warn me if I'm going too fast etc.

Apologies for vagueness but I've never used one before.

Polar Beat app in conjunction with Polar H7 heart rate strap will give you realtime recording informaton and verbal updates on autolap detail.

App is free and option of adding Zonepointer and Zoneoptimizer as increased functions.

Basic app is pretty good and gives you zone feedback. Happy to share some of my own files or you can see public files on https://flow.polar.com/ so you can see the information.

Starting out and already thinking of the HRM?

We are very different people! I guess each to their own, there is no right or wrong time. I might get one in years to come myself! Do know others who have gone for the HRM starting off and left it in the box afterwards, put away for when they start getting very serious about the sport.
