Sold a written off car

    Hi

So I bought my car last June through a dealership which I won't name. Now comes time for me to sell my car and I bring it to get a few small things fixed (to a different garage) and they basically tell me that the car was previously written off and is in bad shape.

Obviously I'm not going to sell it on to anyone now as it wouldn't be right, but I paid nearly 6 grand for it last year and I was just wondering if anyone could explain if I have any comeback to the original garage I bought it off? I didn't do a cartell check when I bought it which is my fault but surely buying it off a registered garage it should be in saleable condition?

Thanks in advance for any advice

Was it actually written off, or is there an issue that is very expensive to fix? First step would be contacting the dealer you purchased the car from.

Written off in the UK and then imported according to the cartell check that iv now had done. Car is overheating and now has a host of problems stemming from this 'crash' would it make a difference that it has been a year?

I guess it depends on what class of write off it was.

Surely it should have been mentioned by them no matter what class?

If you don't ask, they won't tell you.

Car Dealers are not known for being upfront and honest on vehicle faults.

(I know, it's anecdotal, but has to be said!)

Ye fair enough, but as a SIMI registered car dealer I should have some come back that the car was not fit for purpose?

OP the way I see it is the problem you have here is the time that has passed since you bought it and proving that the car was repaired prior to you buying it from the dealer. This may involve you having to get an engineers report carried out and then possibly taking the dealer through the courts if they challenge it.

Technically it is not illegal to put a written off car back on the road after fixing up (well, certain class of write-offs anyway), so in a roundabout way the garage did nothing wrong.

But I too would be angry that they sold it to you. Did you not do a cartell check when you were buying it?

S.I.M.I. means nothing as far as the consumer is concerned. They are a country club for dealer members, don't hold your breath on them helping you or ruling against one of their own members. People really should not believe everything they see on the tv or hear on the radio.

SIMI are there to help dealers, not customers.

Try the National Consumer Agency maybe.
