Leap Card not topped up

    Hi there

I topped up a leap card i don't use that often in a shop with a 5 day rambler ticket this morning, but when I went to use it, it said 0 days remaining on it. It looks to me like there may have already been the last day from another rambler ticket on it, but it seems as if it never applied the new one! Any idea what has happened there or what I should do?

    Thanks

The card stores each ticket as a separate product.

Presumably, you still had a day left from the previous ticket that you had loaded onto it, and it is smart enough to read from the oldest product that you have stored on it, and used the last day on it.

The next day that you next decide to use the rambler ticket, it will read from the new ticket that you have loaded onto the card and you will have four days left.

Thanks for the quick reply! I was hoping you'd say that :) I checked the card history and balance online, but it doesn't seem to give you any information about what tickets are loaded on the card (it says
"No tickets found on the selected card"). or how many days remaining you have, so I'm glad at least that they've catered to this scenario. That said, it'd be nice when you're topping up with a rambler if it checked that there was a full one already loaded on the card and told you before spending the cash.

You can always ask any Dublin Bus driver to check what's on the card by putting the card on his/her machine.

This post highlights a shortcoming in how expired Rambler products are handled on Leapcards.

When the Rambler expires,it is retained on the card as one of the 5 "products",thus you could have 5 products but only one of them a "Live" Rambler.

Also,I have come across situations where the card returns the "No Valid Product" message to a stunned customer, who then comes to the driver and sez "I've just bought a Rambler etc etc"...When I interrogate the Card...Voila !....for some reason it has not defaulted automatically into the new valid product, and requires a manual cancellation....Nobody appears to know why ?

Expired Products need to be erased from the Card immediately,if only to remove the risk of confusion !

It can take 24-48hours for your online account to update.

AFAIK if you buy a ticket or credit in a Payzone shop, the update is immediate. It's not like where you make a purchase online and have to collect it from a machine somewhere.

I think AlekSmart above has highlighted the cause of the problem.

While top-ups etc go onto the card immediately is it not the case that they won't show on your account history on the website for some time?

The problem (and it isn't really a problem as such) is that the righthand validator will display the number of days remaining on the active ticket - the OP already had a ticket with a day left. When they start using the new ticket, they will see the number of days left on that.

Yeah, works both ways like that. generally seems to be upto 2 days for topups to be distributed for your card to collect, and upto 2 days for a transaction to be available to see on the website.

Yes, the website can take a day or so to update but that's not the issue the OP is highlighting. What the OP did (purchase a ticket in a Payzone shop to add to the Leap card) is a transaction that involves an immediate update to the card which has nothing to do with what you can or can't see on the website.

The delay in collecting a topup from a machine doesn't apply here, the OP paid for a ticket to be added at a Payzone machne which is an immediate update, just like adding cash to a card at a ticket machine in a Dart station.

    I'm in a similar position.

I topped up in a Daybreak shop last night as when I used the bus yesterday it registered saying 1 day remaining. Today it says 0 days, even though I got a 30 day rambler.

Am I safe enough in assuming that it'll be grand tomorrow?

My online account says nothing about rambler, not even my old one.

Rambler tickets are individual separate products.

When you load a new one onto the card, the current ticket will continue to count down to zero before the new ticket starts being read.

    You will be fine.
