Wireless cards for PC.

I have inherited a fairly good desktop PC from work, it was used as a cad work station so has a lot of memory and a good graphics card. It was networked so doesnt have a Wifi card. I want to use it as my main PC at home so am looking for Wireless card recommendations. In addition to general surfing I want the ability to stream videos or music to other devices around the house, such as a tablet. It is strictly a microsoft/android house and don't require connectivity to fruit, if that helps.

    Suggestions greatly accepted.

Have you considered homeplugs? Carries the network over the electrical wiring in your house. I may not hit the peak speeds of decent wifi (assuming a good card and router), but tends to have consistent throughput and less interference.

Im using one and quite happy with it. Deskptop about 12-13m away from router with a wall in between and certainly trumps wireless in my case

    Thanks,

I don't think homeplugs will work very well here, it's an old house and the mains is very noisy, I've had to put additional filters on my hi-fi to stop clicks, bangs and even radio transmissions from coming through. I'm afraid it's got to be wireless.

How far from your router are you with the PC? Is there many objects/walls between the router and the PC?

You can get an app for your phone to check the signal and speeds from around your house. WIfi analyser is one I think.

A simple cheap 2.4ghz wireless card will do the trick in most cases but it's worth testing.

I bought this one the other day. It's on special offer 35% off, €30 delivered at the moment. My PC is in the same room about 5 meters away from the router. I went wireless just for the sake of cleanliness. I have 120mb BB, get about 90mb on the wireless but ping is always less than 20 milliseconds which I would deem more important.

Edit, can't post the link on my phone for some reaosn for, search for the below on Amazon.

    TP Link - TL WDN4800

Thanks, the crux of the matter and the reason I posted is that I don't know the first thing about wireless routers. I have the technical ability to open a pc and install a wifi card but I dont know the first thing about the hardware spec I should be looking for. What is the difference between a card that just receives and one that will stream as well. Or do they all stream? The pc is only about 3m from the router, which is the standard UPC one.

What net speed do you have? If it's that close you could just go with a cat6 cable.

If you don't want to go cable a dual band 300mb/s wireless card might be the best choice. You would have to enable the 5ghz band on the UPC box but it should give a better signal over short distances than the 2.4ghz band.
