Is there much hassle importing alcohol into Ireland for an individual?
I know would have to factor in shipping etc but would VAT make it not worth it?

Hiding it up the rectum would be my suggestion.

I think there's a thread on this in the Food and Drink forum, at least I remember there was a site I found on there, can't remember it now, that shipped to Ireland and it seemed to work out a lot cheaper to buy it from there.

Yep, there's a site called Gourmondo.de. If you open it in Google Chrome it will translate for you.

On a related note does anyone know what the tax situation is like for importing coal to Newcastle?

Did it take you long to come up with that?
I'm sure Newcastle would import coal if it was cheaper

Just buy it in Aldi like all the other alcoholics.

Are you bringing it in yourself or getting it delivered?

If you bring it in yourself you don't have to pay excise on it.

    Lidl is cheaper :pac:

This week they are doing 8 x 500ml of Perlenbacher for €7.29

Importing within the EU should be fine for personal use. But excise duty isn't all that much on beer here, the Lidl beer above includes VAT and Excise. Pub prices are a different matter but the Perlenbacher above costs €1.04 a pint.

Maybe get the ferry to France and drive back ?

Getting third parties to carry you hooch would expose you to customs.
