Left my Giant Defy 3 into City Cycles in Fairview to get new tires. I was using the stock tires that came with the bike and got my first puncher, so said I'd drop it in to get the tube replaced and get more durable tires while I'm there. As I'm only a newbie biker I was unsure which tires to go for and the lady at the till advised me to get 'Michelin lithion 2' tires. They charged me €37.50 for each tire, then after I got home I did a quick Google search, only to my surprise to find them on sale at only €18.49. I understand bike shops have to make a mark-up but I thought this was just ridiculous. Has anyone else been ripped off in City Cycles?

    Re the €18.49 price:

Was it from the same shop or some other online retailer?

Did it include the tube(s) you had replaced?

Did it include the labour of fitting the tyre?

Did it include cost of disposal of the replaced tires?

Hi Dastardly, as I'm a new Boards member they won't let me post links, but if you search for the on chainreactioncycles. com you can find them at that price there

Ridiculous thread. There's absolutely nothing wrong with what City Cycles did or the amount that they charged.

CRC state that the RRP on Lithion 2 tyres is €37.99. It just so happens that they have them on sale at 51% off. City Cycles don't have them on sale.

Tough luck. Move along. Nothing to see. At least you were able to get free advice on tyres seeing as you were too lazy to bother to do online research yourself. Strange that given that you were more than willing to do a bit afterwards and post a nonsense thread. Next time buy them online, buy the tubes online, buy the tyre levers online, learn how to change them all online and do it at home yourself for a cheaper price.

They are on special offer on CRC - normal price €75 a pair.

You can't expect a shop to match an a huge online retailer doing a special offer. Your shop probably paid much more to buy them in.

And CRC aren't going to give you advice or come down to Dublin to fit them for you.

This is normal for a bike shop. They don't have the massive turn-over that somewhere like chainreaction has so they can't massively discount products like CRC can.

They also have much, much greater over-heads per customer sale.

So I don't feel the pricing is unfair.

If you don't mind waiting for stuff to be delivered, don't need a person's advice and don't mind fitting it yourself then online sales can be great value. You'll need to decide what works for you. That said, if it's reasonably close then I'd try and give the business to the local bike shop. It's nice to have one.

There's a 51% discount on them at the moment on Chainreactions. The RRP is 37.99. The shop aren't having a sale. So it's unfortunately tough luck.

In future you can order and change them yourself.

Plastik I was unable to do an online search as previously stated I dropped it in just after I got a puncher (didn't have my phone) and this was the closest bike shop. Yes CC are having a sale but they say the RRP is €30.99 not €37.99. In this day an where bike shops are looking for repeat business it's beyond me how they think they can get away with over a 100% mark up! As for the advice i'm not impressed either. She should have advised me to get Gatorskins that are much more durable for the winter.

Peterthedrummer- This link includes a free tube which City Cycles charge me another €10 for. So what your comparing here is an RRP of €37.99 compared to €47.50. Still paying far above what's reasonable!

    Real popcorn thread here.

Advice is opinion: you may find some variation for legitimate reasons, op,

I'd not advise gatorskins myself without making the lack of grip clear. How one can know so much yet present as an innocent is pretty amusing

If you knew* that, why ask...and then complain about the answer?

Yep and you havent a clue so maybe listen to those that do in this thread and learn something.

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ie/en/michelin-lithion-2-tyre-grey-23c-free-tube/rp-prod119601 Lithion2 RRP€37.99. That CRC throw in a free tube with the deal is neither here nor there.

CRC have them reduced to €18.49 from the RRP. City Cycles have them for sale at the RRP. They don't have 100% mark-up, or anything close.

If she had advised you to get Gatorskins you would still be on here posting the same thread as they would have likely charged you €47 a tyres as opposed to a CRC price of €34.

Yes CC are having a sale but they say the RRP is €30.99 not €37.99.

It says 37.99 RRP on the site. With the exception of the OP, all other posters so far weigh in that there was nothing untoward in the price and service

MOD VOICE: Citi Cycles don't seem to have done anything wrong or unfair, they charged the RRP and unless someone else has something to add about their customer service or pricing, I will close the thread, if you feel there is something to add please PM me and I will consider re opening the thread.
