RTE Player not in HD?

I tried watching love/hate last night on the RTE player Xbox app but the quality was atrocious. It's nothing to do with my connection because YouTube and Netflix load content in perfect quality. Is RTE player not HD on all devices?

Also, on Sky, RTE 2 is the only Irish channel in HD even though I've seen people with just the 4 channels have RTE, RTE 2 AND TG4 in HD so even if I watch it live on TV it'll be in sh!t quality. We had to watch the All Ireland final in SD quality and anyone who has seen SD on a large TV knows how sh!t it is compared to what most of us have adjusted to watching by now. Makes me worry about how things will be for terrestrial Irish channels when 4k becomes the most used resolution like how 1080p is now, even though HD channels themselves are only 720p.

Rte player is only for mobiles ie a 4 ins screen and the other reason is so that RTE can have 2 dogs on the screen rather than one. The day rte ever considered the viewer is long gone. I bet most of RTE employees watch SKY. I watch nothing off RTE except the teletext occasionally on RTE 1 on sky!! For a small country we are master of the cockups. We all pay the licence fee but depending where you live you get 2nd class treatment.

    A great little country.

At least the GAA recognised this and put games on proper HD = LOVELY
PS I have a large screen tv as well.

Ahh RTE and Irish TV. At least Saorview has actually been a success in my view with HD channels. Out West we used to have a VHF and UHF aerial FFS to get a crappy analogue pic....

From what I read, Sky say it's down to RTE to provide them with RTE 1HD and RTE say it's Sky. AFAIK the transponder on the satellite is full (using DVB-S) and cannot accommodate another HD channel. Being as Sky provide the carriage for RTE for free then it's a catch-22 situation. Sky don't want to rent another TP for RTE 1 HD and RTE don't want to pay Sky for the carriage on a TP.... So we're stuck with this situation of RTE 1 not being in HD on Sky at the moment. Perhaps when UTV Ireland start up next year and Astra 2G is in orbit (Jan/Feb '15) things may change.

As for their online player... shocking. Forced adverts and then if you try and jump ahead to the weather in the news, you are forced to watch another advert....

I emailed them about an issue on LG smart tv's where the player plays until the first ads, plays the ads but then will not restart the programme.

Answer was "we do not support smart tv's"

Bizarre as TG4 have an app for LG smart tv's

I'm pretty sure TG4 is still SD only on Saorview. Unless I missed something.

Yes, but RTÉ Player XL is a large-screen interface which has been designed to make it easier to use RTÉ Player on large screens.

Except the actually most important matches, the finals. They aired them on RTE 1 and Sky only has RTE 2 in HD. You're right though, I hardly ever watch anything on Irish TV. Hardly ever watch anything on Sky to be honest, except any on demand boxsets I was gonna download through other means anyway, its just easier using on demand. If I was living on my own I wouldn't even have any channels, just the internet and connect the hard drive or laptop to TV, saves a few euro

I can't wrap my head around paying for the development of an app for Xbox and other things like smart TVs and Rokus etc. if they're not even going to have everything in HD.

There's no choice between the two on Xbox...

I watched the All Ireland final in HD on RTÉ One. It was available to everyone across the country. You can't blame RTÉ if Sky does not want RTÉ One HD

But why any of this is being discussed in a thread about the RTÉ Player is beyond me.

When you increase the video quality from Auto to 2Mbps, it always drop back down to the lower setting after an ad break. Very annoying.

I reported it before and was basically fobbed off.
