Is he an ifa member? AFAIK they have illness benefit of €200/week as part of membership. Should get him ten or twelve hours per week of frs labour.

put a notice in local shop/co-op looking for someone for a few hours a day. It mightnt take the full 6 weeks to recover but dont chance anything as recovery could take longer if damage is done.

Do they give that with just the membership subscription? I thought you would have to be in an accident and lose a limb for that insurance?

I think you're right, also it's only paid while you're in hospital......very limited payouts.

A friend had surgery twelve mths ago, and now has a hernia, doctor says it's because he didn't do the six weeks rest

Does the subscription cover it or is it extra?

By all means follow up on some of the good advice given previously. My own opinion (for what it's worth) is that 6 weeks is a relatively short period of time.

Thinking if it was me and my own farming situation, there really isn't any compulsory lifting that I couldn't put off for 6 weeks for the sake of my health. It really is about compromise and prioritising.

Yes it might not be perfect but is it the end of the world?

extra, you say how much you want of a cover /week think i am on the max cover of 760/wk for being fully laid up

Farmers should seriously look at taking out a PHI policy ( permanent health insurance). Much much better and more comprehensive type of cover compared to the cover you get under the FBD cover.
The premium for PHI policies is 100% tax deductible at your full marginal rate.

FBD will top up the cover you get with IFA membership at a price,
they also do a serious illness insurance as well, I'm sure they'd do it as comprehensive as you'd want it.
The level of benefits would be reflected in the premiums,

another point, if someone has surgery and is told not to drive for 6 weeks they will not be covered if they have an accident while driving during this time. Just bear it in mind.

    Medically unfit.

It's like if you are working off farm and get a cert from the doctor and then decide to go into work (who does that? !)

    It happens.
I've sent a few lads home because of it. Not insured to be at work.

I had hernia done Tuesday. Ifa member and Fbd insured but nothin specified for health ins.
Just said I'd let ye know there's nothing fun bout getting hernia done. Advised to avoid heavy lifting for 12 weeks. I hope rain holds off and cows stay out.
This is my third hernia at the ripe old age of 31!!!
