I wouldnt really worry too much about the i3 specs. The fact that you are buying brand new means that you are most likely going to get a laptop running windows 8 (or preferably 8.1 so you don't have that horrible update path) which will perform better than any previous version of windows on slower hardware. Save yourself a few bucks and look at the size and portability of the laptop that you are most interested in rather than the specs. You will see that brands like Asus and Acer have really nice "ultrabook" size laptops (12-14 inch) that are really light and great on battery power for small money. If it's just for college use and surfing I wouldn't be pushing more than 350- €400. If you need to open word documents then you can download "libre office" which is completely free.

I got help in this forum before and I'd agree that you don't need amazing specs if you'll just be using word/powerpoint/excel. I think memory is more important in that regard and even still things like Google Drive and Dropbox come in useful.

If you're in college then portability is the main issue! Walking between buildings with a really heavy bad gets annoying....For that I'd stick with 13/14 inch screen or something.
