House flooring options

    Hi all,

    Looking for some design help please !!! Amateur at best, but trying to make the right decisions to cut down on costs.

    New build. 3 storey house. Planning floors as a start...

    Hall + Living Room == Walnut Laminate
    Kitchen/Dining Room (open plan)==Glossy Marfil light->cream Tile
    Stairs ==cream carpet
    Landing and all bedrooms on first floor walnut laminate again.
    carpet next stairs + top floor master bedroom

    What has me worried is the first floor i.e.
    Landing and all bedrooms on first floor walnut laminate.

    Is Walnut floor to dark for bedrooms ?
    Banisters are oak varnished, concerned these clash with walnut laminate ?
    Does carpeting the landing and walnut laminate in the bedrooms make sense desing wise, or look silly ? Debating study on this floor with a light towards white laminate floor.

    Design wise does carpet landing + 3 bedrooms walnut floor + study light wood make sense ?

    Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated !!

    Thank you ;)

    Considering flooring for 2 storey s/d at the minute as well. Our plan is for spirit marfil tile on hallway through to & including kitchen / dining/utility. We are thinking of either AC 4 grade laminate or solid wood flooring in living room - where there will be a fair amount of traffic ( possibly something like Russian Oak or Junior Oak laminate, which is a mid colour) - would walnut be very dark throughout your house ? Depends on amount of light entering your rooms I suppose ? We plan on carpeting the stairs and landing and putting AC3 grade laminate ( probably light colour) on the bedrooms. We are also advised to use a good quality soundproofing underlay with the laminate on the bedroom floors.

    Yes there is a lot of light coming into house, but i agree with you. that is my concern also. !!
    is Walnut too dark throughout ???? and for bedrooms ?

    does carpet on landing and then laminate in bedrooms make sense or look silly ?

    thanks !!!

    going with marfil tiles also ;)

    I was advised against walnut in high traffic areas as it's a softer wood that scratches easily (so said the flooring dude anyway).

    That is very true. However when you are looking at an AC4 or better rated laminate, then it will take the traffic just as well as any other colour :)

    what about an american walnut i think its called. its lighter than the normal walnut and might tie in with the oak better.

    in same boat as yourself re landing and bedrooms and what to carpet etc.. can anyone recommend what type of wood flooring is best suitable for dogs? in current house we have solid pine down and they have it destroyed. one of our dogs has thick black nails and she scratches the wood easily. so im debating going for solid oak stairs or to carpet it

    The hardwood flooring industry uses a janka chart to rate the hardness of hardwood...walnut is on top of this chart ahead of teak,oak,jatoba etc...Great advice from the flooring dude!!!!!

    Be careful with a dark wood floor. As the dog hair shows up real easy, I had a pain in my face hoovering every day ao the house didn't look like we were slobs !!
