HOW’S THIS FOR a moo-ving tale of courage in the face of mortal danger?
UK fire crews had to rescue a pregnant cow that had gotten itself stuck in the window of a World War II pillbox near Skegness last week.

Fire crews were called to the scene at around 10.30am last Thursday morning, where they freed the distressed animal using heavy breaking equipment.

Spencer Creek of the Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue team said the case was a bit unusual for them:
Compared to fighting fires this may seem a little bit strange, but because of the county’s rural nature animals do occasionally get into danger. With the cow trapped in the stone window it was actually causing swelling around its neck, so it was important we had the vet there to calm the animal so it wasn’t in distress.
The rescue team finally left the scene at half past five that evening, seven hours later.

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue have assured everyone that the cow appears to be fine, and is “moving on” from its ordeal. Thank god for that.

Poor old cow :(. On a serious note, have any farmers on here ever found livestock getting trapped in strange and odd places?

I heard a story about a cow climbing the steps of this old castle, but unable to reverse itself back down the stairs, the tragic beast fell to its death :(

How much does a cow cost? A cow is a cow is a cow.

How much did that ridiculous rescue cost? Add up wages for several firefighters as well as at least one vehicle and equipment tied up for a whole day putting real lives at risk.

Answer these two questions the next time you wonder what is wrong with the world!

Good one in the news recently:

Runaway cow and calf rescued from County Meath island
A runaway cow in the Republic of Ireland has turned up safe and well after going missing for more than two months.

Rambling Rose, a suckler cow, was pregnant when she vanished from her owner's farm in July.

Last week, the cow was spotted on a small island in Lough Breakey, County Meath, where she had recently given birth to a calf.

Both animals were taken to safety by Meath River Rescue on Saturday morning.

Meath River Rescue chairman Christopher Rennicks said the rescue operation began at 10:00 BST and was complete by 11:50 BST.

Mr Rennicks said he had wanted to start the rescue when the animals were spotted on the island on Sunday 28 September, but thought the cow needed to build up her strength for the journey.

    'Relaxed'

The cow was given extra food all week before the team embarked on the rescue.

The team harnessed Rambling Rose to their boat and kept her afloat with lifebuoys as they led her through the water and back to shore.

Mr Rennicks said although the water was 20ft (6m) deep in places, the cow remained relaxed and managed to swim calmly.

The rescue team carried out a complex operation to guide Rambling Rose through the water and back to shore
The cow's owner, Sean Kelleher, said he was delighted when he heard she was still alive, and with a calf in tow.

"I was hoping that she would turn up. When she went missing I searched for several days, but eventually I had to give up hope," he said.

    'Robinson Crusoe'

Mr Kelleher said he initially thought the cow might have drowned, but was pleased that she had managed to survive on the island for such a length of time.

"She was due to calf around mid-August, so we think the bullock is around three weeks old now," he added.

Mr Kelleher said the calf was named "Sunday, as a literary nod to the castaway novel Robinson Crusoe", which featured a character who was named Friday, after the day of the week he was found on an island.

The rescue team said Sunday the calf was 'excitable' during the rescue and had to be restrained before being carried back to land on the boat
A vet was on hand to check the animals once they returned to shore, but Mr Rennicks said they had come through the journey unharmed.

Around 200 people watched the complex rescue operation that led to Rambling Rose and Sunday being reunited with their owner.

A happy ending for both the rescue team and the farmer, who never expected that the phrase, 'when the cows come home', would ring so true.

Not a cow as such, but I came across a German police reoprt not too long ago that read :

"During night-time investigations, a yoghurt cup was noticed waddling towards to officers"

A hedgehog had got stuck in it, apparently, and the officers helped him out of his predicament.

I understand the principle, it may seem like a waste of time, but it's still a distressed animal that needs rescuing. You couldn't just leave it there to suffer indefinitely.
