Hi, can anyone tell me about the legalities of using photos from premiership games on a blog I'm setting up? I'm planning to use Google ads so that makes it commercial, right?

I noticed that some major websites like BBC will source their photos "Gettty images" etc.

But take this joe.ie sports article for example (I'm not allowed post links here for some reason) do they have to pay to use there football pics ?

Offhand, this would be covered under the EU copyright directive which Irish law implements. The images would be copyright by the respective media/rights holder. There are a few exceptions such as fair dealing which deal with mostly non-commercial usage of the images. You might try to find images on the in sites like flicker that have a creative commons licence which allow use?

    Cheers Manach.

Yea there is a limited selection on flicker I could go with. Might just have to stick with that to be safe.

Absolute NO No in almost all cases - if its an official league shot or a news agency or any of the media accredited agencies at the game - you would be screwed if you were caught using their pic

Get permission from a private individual attending the game (twitter/flicker etc)

Best advice would be to use Getty Images Embed.

All the latest photos, perfectly legit to use, and easy to embed, of course.
