"US champion swimmer Michael Phelps, who recently returned to top-level competition after a two-year retirement, was suspended for six months by USA Swimming on Monday following his recent arrest on a drunken driving charge.
Phelps, 29, the most decorated Olympian of all time, will also not represent the United States at the 2015 Fina World Swimming Championships in Russia next August, USA Swimming said in a statement."

I'm in two minds how I feel about this- on the one hand it sets a good "zero-tolerance" statement about drunk driving, on the other hand should his personal life affect his swimming career?

    I think it's spot on.
Phelps is happy to see his image used in sponsorship which is often aimed at young hopefuls in swimming. It's a good message to see him held to account for his actions.

Similarly many of us would loose our driving jobs were we caught DD.

Everything in life has consequences and for someone particularly in such a prominent public position the option to completly compartmentalise their personal and professional lives isn't an option.

Not sure about this either. His private life should not effect his working life.

He is in the public eye, kids even young adults aspire to be like him. He could of killed someone while driving under the influence. I say he got off lightly.

If he was a professional, he wouldn't allow his private life to effect his working life.

If I got done for DD on my way anywhere, I'd lose my job. Simple as. Having a license is a requirement.
I don't have any sweetheart sponsorship deals to honor regarding my personal image and reputation either, so http://youtu.be/yBD4Ifj4aNw

He's some tulip. Worse than Woods, at least with Tiger, it was his private partslife that got him in strife.
