Those arent specs, those are requirements. And VERY old graphics cards at that.

Yeah what you listed are just specs and not actual parts, are you willing to build yourself? and if you want to run Skyrim on ultra(which a 4 year old graphics card can) do you want to run it on Ultra with graphics mods like texture packs, enbs, enhanced terrain/weather/foliage because a 4 year old graphics card can certainly NOT do that. If I were building now I'd go with the GTX 970, it's an expensive card and would probably put you slightly over budget just for the build. In your €850 budget do you need a monitor/kyeboard+mouse/windows key etc... or is it just a pure build?

Well im going to have SkyRe and frostfall for sure and probably other retexture and weapon mods for sure and yes i am willing to build my self and i just need a monitor since i have a keyboard and mouse from an older desktop how ever i could try and get a monitor some other way

Forget about the os, download windows 10 for free until late 2015, put it towards a 970

Pretty much anything you spend 800 euro on will blast Skyrim with any mods, though I'm not one for giving advice on parts, for that money you'll be fine

A 970 with an i5 processor, 8gb ram and a 2 terabyte drive probably won't come to that. Cheap windows 7 key and a second hand flat screen from adverts or done deal and you're away.

You're sitting right beside the screen if you intend on using KBM (I'd recommend it for Skyrim), so 32" is a pretty big size. Your motherboard will have the audio card build in too.

A 970 is kinda overkill for 1080p tbh and would eat up nearly half of your budget.

The 960 will be out later this month.

2gb would be plenty for Skyrim anyways, I just went to research it. GTX 760 would futurproof for a while anyways. Or even an AMD built *shudder*

Nothing wrong with AMD graphics cards at least. Desktop CPU's are a bit dated but were good value at release.

THe R9 280/285 is a better card than the gtx 760.

Yeah you're right, a lot of people write off AMD because they see it as the crappy option. The R9 290 was the best value card on the market until the GTX 970 came out and their CPU's are more than enough in 90% of games. The CPU only holds you back when it relies heavily on single threaded performance and that's where you see Intel really storm ahead.

On topic though I would recommend anyone looking to build a decent rig now to get themselves a nice z97 Mobo(ASRock do great value ones) a Noctua NH D15, i5 4690k paired with some cheap 1600MHz ram and a GTX 970 from Gigabyte.

You're looking at €90/100 for the board, 215 for the CPU, 90 for the cooler, 340 for the 970 and 60 for the ram. Get a decent 600W PSU from a reputable brand like Corsair, EVGA, Cooler Master(VS series only) or Seagate would be my choice. Get yourself a nice full tower chassis for future room and expansion.

    A nice rig would be
    4690k - 215
    ASRock Z97 Extreme 3 - 103
    Corsair Vengeance - 65
    Gigabyte GTX 970 - 340
    Corsair CS650m - 80

Then get a case that suits your needs for €100 to €150(for a good enthusiast case, I have a HAF X and never regretted spending 140 on it) or buy a mid tower in the 50 to 70 range and add another €50 for a TB HDD(Western Digital are my personal fav)

Later down the line you can get the Noctua and an SSD(Crucial MX100 is ludicrous value)

If you really can't stretch that and I understand that some people really cannot, then you could go for a locked Intel i5 4430 for 165 and an ASRock H81 Pro for 48. This knocks 100 off the build and still leaves you with a GTX 970 but you could wait for the GTX 960 as well and possibly knock another 50/60 off the build. It's entirely up to you but a GTX 970 is a BEAST of a card.

I was joking with the AMD bit, I've a €400 AMD machine that pulls about 33 in Heaven Benchmark, which is quite decent if you ask me! A similarly specced Intel would be more than enough for most people anyways, especially if its RPGs and stuff you'll be playing

Oh I wasn't calling you out specifically mate :) just some people on the greater interwebz share the opinion AMD are crap.

Seems reasonable enough, I would upgrade the 4430 to a 4460 though :) I meant to say 4460 in my earlier post, it's only a few quid dearer. I don't know where you're buying from(I recommend hardwareversand if you're ok paying by bank transfer) but pick the cheapest 8GB kit you can by a decent brand, last time I checked 8GB of Crucial Ballistix was the best for 60ish euro.

The hard drive is decent, I like Western Digital, I have a Green as my bulk storage and the Blue is better. Sometimes you'll see 1TB drives in the 40/50 euro range and you can see the same drive but only 2TB for about a tenner more, go for that if you can.

The R9 280x is a lovely card, I don't know a whole pile about AMD cards but the only two after market brands I'd buy are Sapphire or XFX(others may be better but for me these are the best).

The case I'm not sure of but Bitfenix make decent cases, checked the Merc Alpha on HWVS and it wasn't there, I like the Bitfenix Prodigy, it's about 55 euro pretty decent really, friend has a build in it but you really want a modular PSU for it.

Newegg reviews of that PSU aren't great though, the Corsair CX600m is decent though for 75 euro on hardwareversand. Also this PSU is very good too and it's modular http://www.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsps?adp=0&aid=168844&agid=1628&apop=2

Thanks im probably going to upgrade to 4460 and get the PSU you recommended as well as a different case and keep the rest the same but if i come across a 2tb hard drive for that little extra i'll probably get that too thanks for all the brilliant advice :)

Before you bite the bullet and order, post the parts and total cost, I highly recommend hardwareversand, I've never had trouble with them whatsoever! Also enjoy Skyrim but don't mod too heavily to start off with or you'll get random crashes every so often :D with the 3GB VRAM in the 280X you should have no problem extending the draw distance far and get loads of foliage and texture mods. Enjoy mate and you're welcome :)

Oh im not biting the bullet i wont be ordering until around start-mid november i just wanted to know what i was getting so i could order around the time with no delay and thanks for saying about not modding heavily at first because that would have been the first thing i would have done and again thanks for the great advice

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,397 ✭✭✭✭Digital Solitude

Make sure Skyrim works off, then turn on 10 or so mods at a time, so if one crashes it won't take long to single out.

You're sure all your components are compatible?

The person who recommended them to me said they were but i'm just about to double check that

What would be the ideal size resolution and input for a monitor for this pc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,299 ✭✭✭✭BloodBath

    1920x1080 aka 1080p.

HDMI or DVI, it doesn't really matter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14 DylanK246

Okay thanks and do you know what the ideal size would be ?

    Unreal difference.

But with the 4460 there's the risk the H81M won't have an updated BIOS to use it with.
