what channels are available on free to air and is it a dish or aerial? Do they need to go in the attic to install.

Irish channels are available free to air via an aerial, some are also available via a dish (Saorsat). Some English and many other countries channels available free to air via one or more dishes on various satellites. If near NI border or on East coast may be able to get English channels via an aerial.

No need to go into the attic, an aerial is best on the roof. Dishes also go outside.

Saorview channels with a Saorview box or TV and aerial - http://www.saorview.ie/get-saorview/make-the-switch/

FTA satellite channels with a FTA satellite receiver and satellite dish - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_free-to-air_channels_at_28%C2%B0E

Freesat channels with a Freesat satellite receiver and satellite dish - http://www.a516digital.com/p/freesat-channel-list.html

As winston says above the dish must go outside and have clear line of sight to the satellite. Regarding Saorview it's recommended that the aerial goes outside but in areas when the signal is good enough it can be installed in the attic, a professional installer should be able to advise.
