    Hi all,

Was just wondering what any of ye fellow nurses think about a new graduate nurse working in a nursing home? I plan/hope to move up to Co. Meath and there are limited opportunities in terms of hospital work i feel, in terms of getting a steady job/ stent at the one hospital.

I have checked them out (Kildares Naas General Hospital; Our Lady's Hospital in Navan and possibly Connolly's hospital in Blanchardstown) I mention these because the area in which I plan to live in well these hospitals are within AT MOST 30-40mins minus road traffic :/

So today I rang Nurse On Call cause I cannot accept the grad scheme :) but I will be all over the place with agency and it will be overwhelming coming from a different county ie, documentation, ward layouts etc.

On the other hand, there seems to be tons of work available at a good rate of pay in many nursing homes even for new graduates. I'm just afraid that will this go against me if I decide to go back to hospital work? I'm v confused about it all.

Also if anyone has vital info on what its really like to work in a nursing home (I mean the severity of responsibility, like obviously I know about accountability but I mean the real dodgy/stressful aspects like being the only nurse alone at night/day).

    I really appreciate your opinions!! :) x

    Hi LillyLaur89,

I'm in the same situation at the moment, I've got in touch with FRS Recruitment to help me get a job, I'm living close to the Waterford / Cork border. Enda in FRS was very helpful his number is [PHONE NO MOD-SNIPPED - PM FOR IT, OR GOOGLE], they recruit for all over the country. All the jobs they have are full-time permanent, he mentioned to me that new graduates are earning €16 p/h whereas the grad programmes are alot lower. He told me the duties would be similar, care plans, medication, GP rounds, etc. I have a couple of interviews lined up end of this week and early next week with 2 nursing homes close by - so fingers crossed!
Hope this helps, I'll keep you posted
    Best of Luck!
    Libby :o)

The agency offer nurses contracts of up to 6 months in the.one place could you go for one of those? As opposed to being in one place today and another tomorrow?

It really depends on you goal of where you want to work.
Do you like working in older person holistic care?

    Thanks for the replies guys!

I was recently talking to a trainee nurse up in Meath who works as a care assistant at the w/ends and she said with Nurse On Call you just put down where your available to work i.e. Our Lady's Hospital Navan and she said she almost always gets work once she puts herself available for there.

Monflat - I have seen those posts alright on the website but the prob is that I can't depend that I will get placed there but of course I have put myself forward for these so fingers crossed :) Thanks.

Libby23 - Congrats on graduating! Thanks for the info about FRS. I never really knew anyone that went with this crowd so will defo keep this in mind as an option. I'm sure you will secure a position :) Best of luck with the interviews! What I think I want is Medical nursing/Care of the Elderly but Id rather be in a hospital, so preferably a community hospital. Just to get trained up in IV administration and cannulation courses, even though that will be 3 months post grad i'm sure. I don't think I would like to be in a major city hospital, way too stressful! I do not like stress :P even though it's inevitable in nursing LOL! Do let me know how you get on!

    Many thanks again guys! x
