    Hi,
Am really confused about the guidelines for the practical part of the junior cert.
Want to do guitar and piano in practical - two pieces each.
Is it better to do two instruments?

Do I have to follow the set pieces or can I choose pieces of a certain standard? Do I have to get the pieces approved?

Where can I find clear and definitive info on this?

You can do either four pieces on one instrument or two pieces on two instruments.
It really doesn't matter which option you choose- I did four pieces on piano but loads of people in my class did the two pieces on two instruments and they got on fine in the practical.
Pieces for the Junior Cert music practical have to be at least Grade 2 standard. They don't have to be any particular pieces but my music teacher recommended that we had a variety of genres of music (for example I did two classical pieces, an impressionist piece and a modern piece for my practical).
I don't think you have to get the pieces approved by the Department (I didn't anyway) but maybe just confirm your pieces with you music teacher before the practical to be sure.
I hope this helps but the best person to ask about the practical is probably your music teacher :)

Hey I'm doing my junior cert this year too and my music teacher explained it quiet well to us as she was at a conference about it this past week :)
You can perform two pieces of two separate instruments or 4 pieces on one instrument!
The fact that using two gets you better marks is false , if you really good on one and a bit iffy on the other do all four on one!
You pieces must be up to a certain grade ( not too sure which one sorry)
There's no point in going higher than that if you don't feel confident playing them your not marked on difficulty after all :)
Good luck in your practical ! Hope I helped a bit oh and your pieces don't have to be approved but your teacher might hold a mock practical where she will listen to all four and mark you as if it was the exam !
