I've heard somewhere that apparently if you don't have your N plates up you are actually not breaking the law. Apparently the law only comes into legal effect from 1st Jan 2015. Is this true or have I heard incorrectly?

Came into law during the summer, they have to be up.

    You have to display them.

Even if it were true, what would you have to gain by not displaying them for 3 months?

Nothing. The new law is already in effect. Anyone who passed their test after August 1 2014, has to display them.

However, in typical Irish fashion, the fine for them is not loaded into the Pulse system yet, so non displayers can't get the points for not having them until they are. It will be sometime next month according to this article.

Legally do the plates have to be on the outside of the car in the correct positions ? If the stuck up with the magnetic strips on the inside of the window is that okay

There are no "correct positions" for L or N plates. They simply have to be displayed at the front and rear of the car but you might have a job getting a magnet to stick to glass :D

Bit of sellotape and they'll be grand

I passed a car yesterday on the N7 with one on it. It looked huge compared to an L plate!

Mine are up on very top right corner of the back window and very bottom left corner of the windscreen. Didn't need any selloptape as they stuck on by themselves.

Must be fairly depressing to have to put them up after passing your test.

I remember the best thing about passing my test was pulling down those awful L plates and ceremoniously dumping them in the bin.
