    Hi

On friday with the heavy rain we had some water licked into attic and ceiling of a bedroom.

When I checked the attic I can see a hole on something that looks like could be some waterproof cover (no idea what the actual name is) that goes between the beams and roof tiles, on that cover that there's a hole as you can see on the pics below, is there a DIY way to cover that hole that will last.

Any advice would be appreciate it.

Its only getting worse tonight I guess with the weather outside. The proper fix is to lift the slates on the outside and lay a new run but I guess you are looking for a quick DIY fix. I'm sure you've done a bucket for the night?

From the picture it looks like you have another run of felt 6-10 inches below the bottom of the hole going horizontally? You need to get another piece of felt the width of the rafter or wider and insert the end of it into the join between the two runs and then tack the new felt to the rafters above where the leak was so any water coming in the hole will drip onto the new felt and run down and re-route to the old `good` section....if that makes sense. Make sure you have enough of a gap when the end of new piece slots over the next run of the old felt - i.e. water that does run down your new section needs to be able to get out and continue its run down the next run of the old felt.

Thanks for the info will check tomorrow see if I can do the fix you mention, I thought there might be something special that could be glue over the hole to fix it.

Yes I have the bucket for tonight.

the roofing felt is only meant to be a secondary line of defense to stop water getting in if you have water running down the felt. it means that one or more of your roof tiles have cracked or broken and you need to get someone up on roof to replace them.

The actual leak may be further up the roof, with the water running down the felt and entering at the hole in the felt, so check if there are any tiles missing/damaged also check around chimneys . vent pipes etc.
In the meantime a piece of felt, polythene etc. placed outside the run of felt below leak and inside the hole in felt should divert the water to the gutter temporarily.

thanks for the replies, getting someone to look at it later, does look like the leak is in some other place closer to chimney as wall is wet there but it goes down the felt so coming out 1st place it can

Get the lead flashing around the chimney checked. May need to be tapped and sealed. This is a common enough problem and fix should not be expensive.

    had same problem recently enough
As mentioned the hole in the felt is only one of your problems.
In my case it was the flashing on the chymney where the water was initially coming in.
