Hey Im looking to buy a small to moderately sized car. Max I would be looking to spend is about 2,000.

    Reliability is number 1.

    Engine size 1L - 1.4L

Currently thinking of opel astra/corsa, renault megane (although have suspicions that they are not a great car), honda civic saloon, toyota corolla, ford fiesta.

Any other suggestions, experiences, advice appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,
    John.

The Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla would be the most reliable of that bunch. Or if looking at a smaller car then the Toyota Yaris.
