Boost problem

I have an '05 Avensis D4D which isn't boosting properly. It kinda does when cold, but when warm only really kicks in from 2800 rpm on. Even when cold on a normal throttle it'll pull properly, but put your foot down and you lose boost till 2800 rpm.

So I'm sure the actual turbo is fine, Nothing coming up on a diagnostic, no lights on, no excess smoke, no split vacuum hoses, I've cleaned the EGR, the MAF sensor, the MAP sensor, the inlet manifold, to be honest I'm lost on this one.

It occured to me that the vacuum unit on the turbo might be dicky, and on working it by hand it feels like it's hard enough to operate, but not stiff if you know what I mean. Does any of you guys have something else to try? I don't mind spending money on it, but I don't want waste money needlessly either.

    Any advice appreciated.:)

We had a similar problem in our astra. Late boost, lumpy before the turbo kicked in. I cleaned the egr and blanked it and got a small improvement but still not cured. I unplugged the egr solenoid yesterday and the car feels like new, turns out the solenoid was slow to open and close so air was leaking before boost.
Does yours sound louder before turbo kicks in?

I would say quieter, to be honest. The engine actually runs as smooth as anything, just won't pull as it should. You make a good point about the EGR solenoid, but I reckon it might go into limp mode. It will definitely throw the light on if I disconnect it.

This thing is still the same. I'm thinking it's the VSV thats dodgy. Would a vsv give intermittent trouble, or is it one of those things that when it's gone, it's gone? We have an 03 corolla van 2.0 d4d in work. The vsv is a slightly different part number, but i'm wondering would it work on an Avensis? If for nothing else just to eliminate it as the culprit.
The Corolla pulls like a train, runs perfectly.

Thread revival. Almost 3 years to the day after starting this thread, I have finally cured this cars issue. It turns out one of the very few sensors that don't trigger an EML when faulty on this car is the coolant temperature sensor. I changed it the other night in 2 minutes and the car is flying now. As smooth as anything too.

All down to a 15 quid part in the end.
