Is it ok to remove braces early?

I went to an orthodontist and said I wanted to get braces. During the consultation I told him that there is a chance that I may be going to work abroad in a year's time and wouldn't be able to return for check ups and how would this affect the process. He said that my top teeth would be finished in maybe 6 to 9 months but my bottom teeth could take 12-15 months. So he said that when it's time for me to leave, that he would remove my braces and put them back on when I return, probably a year later. Does this seem routine? I'm kinda getting worried that I'm throwing my money away now.
