Has there really been a "massive" increase in spiders this year?

Report in the IT today claiming that there has been a massive increase in spiders. Could this really be true or is it hyperbole and cheap copy for papers and their websites? What was so special about this year that would lead to more spiders in homes?

I have encountered three big ones in the house in as many weeks and I don't like them but I am just one person so hardly representative. Have there been studies?

I think there has been an increase of pictures of spiders on Facebook! :-) People will believe what they read!
As far as spider bites go, there may well be more bites, due to the spread of False Widows!

It could be something to do with the extended "Indian summer"

We had exceptionally warm weather until a couple of days ago. That may have caused more adult spiders to more visible.
