I am currently staying in a hotel in Dublin. I was asked for a copy of my driving licence on checkin. With data protection, is this standard? Should I ask for it back on checkout?

There is no standard policy. Every hotel is free to set their own policy & you either agree to it or you don't. You could try asking for it back, or for it to be shredded in your presence, but there is not much you can do if they refuse.

I have never been asked to show photo ID upon check in any hotel in Ireland. It is possible, that they are a part of an international chain and that is just their policy. Or they may have a problem with people running up big room service & bar bills, or stag/hen parties damaging rooms and they want to have something on file (other than a credit card) to protect themselves. But again, everywhere is different, there is no standard ID policy that every hotel abides by.

I stayed in Dublin on Saturday night and I had to give a copy of my drivers license. She said it was because I was paying in cash. Even though I was paying at check in time.

Which gave them no cover if you trashed the room, hence the need for official id
