Can any battery charger be used to charge a battery in the car or is there a special charger?

My charger, an auto care EQ475, says not to charge while battery in car as may damage alternator?

Just disconnect the leads from the battery before connecting the charger

    why?

Because that's what the instructions said. I don't know for sure but it might damage the cars electrics if the battery is still plugged in.

I've a trickle charger that can charge a battery without removing anything.

It takes a minute to disconnect the battery, better safe than sorry

You only need to disconnect one lead ( it doesn't matter which one as either will 'break' the circuit).
Also if the Battery has 6 removable vent caps take them off also to allow the gasses formed when charging to escape.
