Cheap G3258 build request

Hi guys, have been out of the loop for quite a while so could use some help if anyone has a bit of time.

Would like a quiet mini itx build using a G3258, small ssd. Will require: case, cpu , ram 4GB will suffice, mobo (OC'able), ssd 120gb is enough (crucial mx500?), ps (Super flower? last build was a PC&P). Gonna try squeeze of bit of oomph via OC. Computer will not be used for gaming at the moment but please leave option for a single gfx card at a later date.

hardwareversand.de seems to be the cheapest place to source components, or if anyone has a cheaper alternative please share.

    Budget: lowest possible.

    CPU Pentium G3258 (Article HV20I32ADE) - €56.42
    Motherboard ASRock H81M-ITX (Article HV1136RWDE) - €55.96
    RAM 4GB G.Skill PC3-10667U CL9 (Article HV20G712DE) - €32.63
    Case Cooler Master Elite 110 (Article HV203F94DE) - €34.92
    SSD Crucial MX100 128GB (Article HV12Z740DE) - €58.13
    PSU Corsair VS 350W (Article HVR350CSDE) - €28.90
    TOTAL = €266.96

Now that's working out pretty cheap. There's really no chance at all you would need that much power but I don't know about getting a cheaper supply. If you wanted to stretch to a little bit more expensive you could change RAM for HV20G392DE (4GB G.Skill kit, the RAM shown above is a single 4GB module). That would cost €36.96, so an extra ~€4. You could get a Cooler Master Elite 120 (Article HV203F37DE) for €37.99, so an extra ~€3.

Now if you want it to be particularly quiet you are going to want to use a different CPU cooler at the very least, and you would might be better off switching to different case fans.

Either case will accept 1 120MM case fan. If you want very quiet then a NOCTUA NF-S12B redux-700 (Article HV30NO86DE) is €12.78. I doubt very much that's the best value-for-money but it should fulfil any quietness requirement pretty well. A much cheaper option that would probably not be noticeably different sound-wise would be a Scythe Slip Stream 120 mm (Article HV30SC55DE) for €5.89.

As you'll probably want a second case fan for either case, you're going to also want a quiet 80mm fan. Again, a NOCTUA NF-R8 redux-1200 (Article HV30NO81DE) would do the job for €9.63 but by no means great value. A COOLINK SWIF2 1200, 800 rpm (Article HV30CL10DE) would probably make no audible difference from the Noctua and costs €5.46.

Maybe with no GPU little ram and a tiny power draw you might not even need the two case fans, but if you do they would be quiet options. Not exactly cheap as fans go, but combined prices aren't going to break the bank either.

Now a different CPU cooler would be highly recommended if you want the g3258 to be particularly quiet OC'ed (if someone thinks otherwise please say so, I'm totally open to correction). A NOCTUA NH-L12 (Article HV30NO57DE) would be pretty damn quiet for €45.97. That much on a cooler frankly seems bizarre for a sub €300 PC though. A Scythe Big Shuriken 2 Rev.B (Article HV30SD05DE) is a little bit louder and a little bit more reasonable at €31.23, but that does still seem quite high given the total build cost.

So if you were to take the build suggested at the start of this post and add the cheaper of each of the fan options suggested then the total cost is going to be up to €309.54. Now those are almost certainly not value orientated fans, but for purely acoustic performance they would appear to be pretty good. Sound could also be limited by getting a power supply whose fan doesn't operate when the power draw is low. I'm not fully certain but I think that would involve spending 40% or more of the build on just a power supply so didn't suggest it. Given that the power draw of the system would probably never even go near 200W, a cheaper supply than the suggest one is certainly an option.

Anyway there just a few ideas to think about.

I'm running a Haswell-E i5, 8gb 1600mhz DDR3, 120gb SSD, 1TB 5200rpm 2.5" HDD in a mitx antec isk-100 case with included 90w PSU with the stock intel fan. Can barely hear it under load.

Cheers for this!! No responses so actually went ahead and ordered this morning.

Mostly very similar, changed to matx and few other bobs. Total €306 after geizhals discounts.

I got the same G3258 and H81M-PLUS combination around a month ago, its overclocked to 4.0GHz for now with the stock cooler and noise isn't too bad for me.

The highest I went to was 4.3GHz but the temps were high and 4.4GHz didn't work so get a different CPU cooler if you want to OC it past 4.0 or if its too loud for you.

Cheers for the reddit link, will have a read later tonight.

Just curious, did your mobo come with the g3258 support out of the box? Just realised that if it requires a bios update I wont have a spare cpu to pop into to get it to post.
