Advice on Components

    Hi guys,

I am in the process of upgrading my first bike (Giant Defy 3 2013) as I have ordered a Giant TCR Advanced 1 2015. I have upgraded some components on the defy; 3t ergonova pro bars and stem and Mavic Aksium wheels and my question is, should I carry over these parts over to the new bike or should I stick with the stock bars (Giant Contact) and wheelset (Giant P-R2).

The guys in the shop reckon the stock parts are better, especially the wheels as apparently they are made by DT Swiss but I would like to get some feedback on here. I done a little research and I can see that the Aksiums are lighter with aero spokes and I would have thought that the 3T bars would be better.

Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated....

The hubs on giant wheels are indeed made by DTswiss. Its funny that people seem a little put of by them as a branded 'giant' wheel when hey are manufactured by one of the best in the business! I say just rie both and se which you prefer, there wont be mjuch of a difference in the wheels at that bracket and best to have two pairs in case of any problems.

Im not 100% sure but giant do run differnt sized steerer tubes. Somtimes 1 1/4 or 1 1/5 as opposed to the usual 1 1/8 which your 3T stem would most likely be. Fitting that wont be an option if so. Best to enquire with the shop on this, I do believe it is oversized. It is then up to you whether you swap out the bars for a mismatching stem/bars combo, or if you prefer the shape of the ergonovas.

Thanks @bwalsh1983, I guess I will just try a mix of each assuming the bars/stem fit. I had them on the defy so I am hoping the fitting is similar, then see what I prefer. I had a bad bad time with the stock wheels on the defy as spokes where snapping every other week and the aksiums were very reliable and look better IMO. Also, I like the drops on the ergonovas so I will see how the Giant bars shape up.

A final note is the price of the parts, the 3t bits and Aksiums are a lot more expensive than the giant equivalents but maybe I am wrong to think a higher price means better quality!

The bars should be fine but as I said I do not think the stem will fit the Giant oversized steerer.
