Hey all , just wondering if ye can help . I have a Citroen van that just went to van heaven and am in the process of buying another , the newer one was taxed privately before even though it's fitted out as a commercial . Thing is I had commercial tax on my old van and have had it since way before the rules changed . So now I'm faced with trying to get commercial tax on the newer van .
I've heard from a few sources that some C.C tax offices are right fussy , Tipperary being one that is very sticky about giving commercial tax to anyone without a heap of proof of self employment , thing is I work full time and just have a small bit of land with only a few cattle but the van is handy for lugging stuff around and I have separate transport for work .
Anyone know if Offaly is anyway more relaxed about it ? I'm in Offaly and have a herd number , what else do I need ?
    Thanks in advance ;)

i had the same problem in longford.

i went into tax office and told them the van was used for agri purposes.(Have farm) and that i wanted to change the tax from private to commercial. they gave me out a few forms. i needed local garda station declaration form stamped and signed and i needed a weigh bridge print out of the van to confirm the van is the weight as is stated in the log book. they will tell u whats needed and where to go and get it done.
and u are a self employed farmer.. there should not be any problem.

What's the rate on the private tax vs the commercial tax on the berlingo ?

if van in older than 08 it goes on the old CC system. most berlingo vans were 1.9 diesel. so a 2007 van would cost u 710 euro a year..
if u tax commerically it is 333 euro a year for a van under 3000kg..

hence why the tax office ask for a weigh bridge cert.

Thanks for the help , the van in question is a 05 Berlingo , 1.9 Diesel , my old van was €333 a year to tax but I see on this van's old disc it's coming out at €666 for private tax , big difference ! So mine will be based on the CC not on weight then ?

yes the new van is priced on CCs and is taxed privately.

u need to weigh ur new van and look to tax it the same way as u taxed ur last van.(as a commercial vehicle). it will take u a few hours running around the place (to and from local tax office and to the cop shop and a weigh bridge to get a print of the vehicles weights but its worth the hassle) plus ur old van was taxed commercially. id be added that into the conversation with the tax office worked as soon as u get up to the desk. ask for the forms and information u need to change tax classes on a new van u bought..

Simplys. but let us know wat or how it works out for you.
