Chances of offloading my car (needs serious work)?

Just got the news today that my 07 Civic CTDI needs the timing chain replaced, which is the guts of €3K all in.

That's just not affordable for me any time soon, so my only real hope is that I can flog the car as a project car or whatever, so I can just get enough to get something cheap that will keep me on the road. I'm a bit screwed as public transport is not an option for my commute.

Do you reckon the car is pretty much unsellable with that kind of work needed? I've just emailed a few of those "cash for cars" type places, but I've never dealt with them before.

that shouldn't be too hard to shift. Advertise it as is with all details you can mention on the overall condition and the work required. Those cash for cars places are a joke, dont even bother with them. they'll tell you your car us worthless and offer you silly miney for it. Best place to advertise would be DoneDeal. there's a damaged/repairable section thats perfect for you.

edit: was that quote from a Honda garage? if so try calling a couple of independent garages.

at a guess, i'd say you could get that done a lot cheaper. is the car at a main dealer at the minute?

Get a quote from another garage.

Thanks - I've another ballpark quote that's still a good bit north of 2K (the first quote isn't from a main dealer either) and I just don't have the cash at the moment. I don't know what other required work is around the corner either, so I'm inclined to cut my losses as much as possible. I know that getting something else for cheap is an unknown as well.

HAd a tsi 2011 golf in last week with only 40 k miles.Timing chain had to be replaced along with all the tensioners etc.Even though out of warrenty, vw goodwill covered 100% labour and 80% part as it is a known fault. However I was told the full price for all work would have been new chain fitted inc vat 960 euro.Unless Honda are way dearer I think you should definitely get other quotes.

If you can't spend the dosh then as others said, stick it up on donedeal and adverts with many pics and a good description. Hopefully someone will give you a good price for it.

Rind every single mech in the area, incl the dealers.
Maybe a dealer would accept a payment plan for you to pay it off over a year? Just a thought.

I'll try some more places, but thats 3 quotes in the same region - I'm les to believe it's a big enough job.

And is it just the chain you need replacing??

PM George Dalton. He seems to be balanced in his pricing.

Ouch! Thats a tough one, €2k+ on a timing chain (are these not interference engines - ie, what else happened when it broke?) and then €1k on tax for a year. Good one is worth €6k or so?

    I'll give ya €2,500 for it ;)

Eh, I'd say value of car, minus repair costs, minus another €1k at least. Who in their right mind would take the risk and hassle if there wasnt money to be saved/made in it.

yep, was thinking the same. Would be happy with 2.5 k or so just to be done with it.

Sent you a pm there if you didn't get it :)

I must have priced it too low - someone coming to collect it for 2.5K tonight! I'm sure I'm taking a hit on it at that price, but there's no loan on it and I just want to move on.

Subscribe to the Bangernomics thread and you'll be back on the road with tax, NCT and change out of that 2.5k :)

Avidly reading it now. Some very strange man-maths are about to be employed to justify the next purchase.

And thanks to all for the replies; especially to toastedpickles for his private messages.
