    * Note * Duplicate thread from Maths forum , the more ideas/info i get the better , mods , feel free to close if you want .

Hi folks , so I'm doing my final year Maths BSc project on Chaos Theory.

One reason why I chose it is because im really interested in Meteorology and it was one of few that I could somewhat relate to the subject.

I'm just wondering if you guys have any ideas or topics I should concentrate on other than the list I have here below..
Dynamical systems ( weather and other nature examples )
    Stability
    Fixed-point & strange attractors
    Logistic equation and henon map

Also , if anyone knows of a book on the subject that I really should get hold of , then please post the details.

    Cheers :)

Although I haven't gotten around to reading them yet, I've heard Mandelbrot's books are essential reading.

The nonlinear dynamics of a pendulum are often interesting.

In this paper ( http://arxiv.org/pdf/physics/0306081.pdf), an equation of motion for a pendulum with various nonlinear damping terms (hysteretic, fluidic, etc.) is presented (equation 8). You could numerically simulate this equation and explore properties of the parameter space.

Thanks guys , shall have a look at both . Got a book today with a lot of applied applications which should get me going .

Have you access to a reliable butterfly, OP?

    Hi,
I have a Bsc in applied physics, my final year project was the chaos of a bouncing ball,
as the periodicity changes and leading to a bifurcation map and more, i thought it was very interesting the whole chaos element of it, definitely worth a shot
