I know this post is up a lot but I'm looking at buying my first car and wondering is a boxy starlet (1988 model) is a good one to start in as it's a small engine and really easy on petrol. Any ideas about other small cars is appreciated as I'm more worried about insurance prices as I'm 17.
    Thanks in advance

Have you got an insurance quote on a Starlet of that vintage? Insurance is going to be expensive on most cars at 17 but they could put a higher loading again on a car of that age. I've heard some insurance companies may not want to insure cars over 15 years old too.

I tried chill , quotedevil , liberty and 123 for the starlet, golf 1.4 , fiesta zetec and a suzuki baleno and couldn't get a quote on any but could get a quote for a audi a4 for 3500 from 123 is there any other insurance companies worth a try?

Forget about online quotes, you age puts you into a high risk category which online quotes are not designed for. No short cut really, you will probably need to spend a few hours ringing around various insurance companies and brokers listed in the likes of the Golden Pages.

Thanks for the advice! Do brokers work for one company or a few.. might save time if they work for a few companies

i'd be shocked if you could insure an 88 starlet at 17 on a provisional. a 1998 starlet would even be a struggle.

if i was starting out again i'd be looking for a cheap ignis sport!

Why do you want such an old and basic car. Surely something from the late 90s early 00s would be better and still very cheap. You can get
cars from then for around 400 or 500 hundred euro,s. Maybe get something with a 1.0 litre or 900cc engine so it would be cheap to inure too. Well ascheap as can be for a 17 year old and maybe look into getting one of them speed moniter things it might make your insurance cheaper.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
