Argos Interview

I have an interview at twelve today for a part-time job at Argos. The only problem is, I don't know whether to wear a shirt and suit pants or a check shirt and jeans.

What kind of questions should I expect? Thanks in advance.

Shirt suit pants and tie minimum. Its an interview not a night out.

Just take your time and answer honestly

I do interviews all the time. I am amazed by the amount of people who will not dress to impress.

It shows you care about getting a job. If no one else wears a suit it sets you apart in a good way. If you don't dress smartly and others do you will look bad.

There is no downside to wearing a suit.

Cheers, I'm rooting out my suit pants as we speak. Don't have a clue what kind of questions to expect though.

I actually have another questions now that I think of it. Since you're experienced at giving interviews, I thought I'd reply directly.

When giving references is it necessary (or advisable) to give your current employer as a reference? I appreciate that there will be a lot of candidates looking for part-time work in Argos so there's every possibility I will end up not getting the job. In that case, I will remain in my current job but I'm worried that giving them as a reference may sour our relationship because they're not aware that I'm looking to leave the job. I could end up with less hours there which would be a bit of a disaster in my current circumstances.

No, I find it perfectly acceptable for someone to say "I don't want my current employers to know I am seeking alternatives".

Honestly, I don't even look at references until I've decided to push the person forward and at that point I'd request them if I didn't see them on the CV.

As for questions, it'll probably be something like (and this is from 4 years of retail interviews):

    1) Name a time you've seen/ given good customer experience
    2) Name a time you've seen bad
    3) How would you deal with 2 bad things happening at once
    4) Give an example of good team work
    5) Have a question ready when they ask you one, not about pay.
    6) What do you know about the company

Important to remember: The interviewers don't enjoy a bad interview. They do actually want you to succeed and enjoy the time with you themselves. Try not to get too panicky and be natural.

Appreciate the response! Your advise was definitely an accurate representation of what happened in the interview. I was requested the go to the floor and approach three customers asking if they wanted help with anything as well, which was an unusual experience. Apparently there are 40,000+ people that have applied for the 600-700 positions so it's very hard to gauge how I did.

Looks like I got the job after all! :) I have to go in for induction in a couple of weeks. Surely they can't have second thoughts about me there? Not that they'd have any reason to (I hope), just a little bit edgy considering I'm leaving my current job to move here.

Congrats! I found out today that I got a job there also! Hoping they don't decide I'm awful at induction :p

No, induction means you got it :) Congratulations.

You'll probably be on probation for 6 months or so, so impress!

    Yes! That's where I'll be too :D

Nice one! :) Actually just got a call there saying that the induction was moved to Friday 31st, did you get the same call?

Didn't get any call from them since the first one. I'm still on for tonight as far as I know! Are you doing the weekend or week day contract?

Ah that'd probably be it. I'm guessing you're doing the weekday contract? I'm doing the weekend contract and the induction was pushed back from Tuesday to this day next week!

Yeah I'm weekday! Hopefully we both get kept on after Christmas and we'll be working together then! :D

Yeah I'd love to be kept on after Christmas :) Let me know how the induction goes for you, nervous but looking forward to it all the same myself!

Induction went well! There was 9 of us there in total, some weekday and some weekend. We were given forms to fill out, this is when you need all the info they asked you to bring. Then we had a tour of the place in full. I didn't realize the size of the stock room upstairs!

Then we were left to watch the DVD's which were fairly boring, they lasted about an hour and a half at least.

We then had another form to sign and they gave us our days and hours for next week. Oh and our uniform, which is an argos t-shirt, I got a purple one! I'll be working on the Friday when you have induction. So excited to start now :D

Glad to hear that you're looking forward to starting! Everything there sounds good. Though an hour and a half of watching DVD's does seem very long!

An immediate start as well is always a good thing, looking forward to going to the induction now myself!

This may seem like a silly question, but it's always one that gets me.. :pac: What should I wear? At the interview I wore a shirt, tie and suit pants but is it necessary to be that presentable at the induction?

I did Induction a few weeks back, you just come in casual clothes.

Everyone was just wearing casual clothes. Although I wouldn't recommend wearing a tracksuit :P Also it was REALLY warm in the room we where in, so feel free to take that into account.
