Lottery winners - always bought in shops?

Over the last few years I've been noting how many Lotto winners are done online, and I can't remember hearing of a single one on the news reports.

    Anyone hear of any?

You always hear, "the ticket was bought in xyz shop in ..." but never "the ticket was bought online".

Talking about the big jackpot winners.

The last 2, the Malin Head syndicate and the €68mill Euromillions, we were also told the shops where the tickets were bought.

I doubt many people play it online. I tried to sign up years ago and it asked for a photocopy of my passport, that will put a lot of people off, I just said feck it I'll go to the shop.

what percentage of people do it online compared to in a shop? Until you can answer that question you have nothing to go on.

Same thing happened with the golden tickets in Wonka bars. All bought in shops.

You may be on to something...

Yeh I saw that on matt coopers show, if you have any gambling on your credit card or account the bank will frown on you . It's a very good point . They don't need a excuse to shaft you

Online lotto playing in Ireland has only been around for years I think? That might be one factor.

AFAIK the main lotto jackpot has been won twice by online players

Most of their sales still comes from retail, so one would expect winners proportionately also mainly retail.

As with a lot of conspiracy theories, a small amount of research debunks it - check their annual reports, where you will see that % of sales from internet last year was probably only around 5% or so if even that. (though will grow significantly in future).

    I think that's correct.

Online lotto playing came in in 2009 or 2010, but sales were small initially because you had to send in passport ID, however this requirement has been relaxed recently I think.

Edit: on reading page 1 of thread, I see other posters already made same point.

That deserves it's own thread here.

i too seem to remember that a while ago a jackpot was won by someone playing online...to think that online players could get screwed over somehow would be too much to take for me, playing online myself...
