Ok so I was kindly directed here for ideas on an alternative home build to this dell http://www.dell.com/ie/p/inspiron-38...n-3847-desktop
to replace my hp a6332 phenom 9500 desktop any help or ideas greatly appreciated.

    1. What is your budget? [€<550]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? [home pc for internet browsing, xbmc (located in other room away from tv so no need for silence), light photo editing, video editing(camera captured gaming to youtube (my son) but not gaming

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [Yes I guess windows 8.1 for the start button]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [Hard drives western digital WDC WC10 EZEX-00BNA5AO 1TB AND seagate ST2000DM 001-1CH-164 2TB

    5. Do you need a monitor? No

5a. If yes, what size do you need. [19'/20'/22'/24'/etc.]

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1920x1080/1440x900/etc.] current is 1680x1050 but will also need to connect to my hd tv (just a thought can i have say a movie on one and browser etc on the other at the same time, not necessary if tricky or expensive)

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [Keyboard/Mouse/Wireless Card/Card Reader/Speakers/etc.] no

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No

    8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser]

    9. When are you purchasing? Probably within the next month

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [South Dublin City/Cork City/Kerry/etc.]

Had a look at the link to the dell pc and this would be very similar (I think):

    CPU - intel core i5 4460 €158.93
    Motherboard - ASRock B85 Anniversary €58.84
    RAM - 8GB Crucial Ballistix Sports €63.03
Video Card - Gigabyte GeForce GT 610 €35.06
    Case - Corsair Carbide 200R €79.90
Power Supply - Corsair VS 350W included with case
    Hard Drive - 1TB WD Blue €46.96

    Total €443.72

So if you already have hard drives you could leave that out of the above list, bringing the total down to €396.76.

You could probably get away with using a cheaper motherboard too, although the one above is pretty cheap as it is.

Perhaps a smaller case and mITX board might be more suitable, I'm not really sure.

I have to admit that I really don't know about the video card tbh. I had a look for the one that is included with the dell and from what I gather the above card seems to have a similar performance. I could be wrong about that so maybe someone else will clarify.

I suppose you could use a different processor, I just stuck with the one listed in the dell for the sake of comparison.

As for windows, if you got a copy of it through reddit software swap then it would only be ~€20 so that would sort that. This I have not done but it has been suggested on the boards many times.

Just thought I'd get the ball rolling, someone else could have better advice

[the prices above were gotten by finding products on hardwareversand.de and copy-pasting them into geizhals.de for discounted prices. a delivery charge would also apply]
