Hi, just got offered a new contract by my employer that is essentially a raise. It's my second contract with the company I joined straight out of college. My first contract had a probationary period of 6 months, during which they had the right to terminate my contract on a weeks notice. The new contract also includes this probationary period, with the same terms. Is this normal?

Also if a new opportunity comes up for me to change job then is it only necessary for me to give one weeks notice during probation? It's currently one month on my current (old) contract.

Sadly yes, it's normal - though not all companies do it.

The whole probation thing really is a disincentive to career progression.

You just have to take the risk - or one approach is to negotiate that if the new job doesn't work out, you can go back to a role similar to your current one.

I wouldn't go giving only one week's notice though, if you want to use the company as a reference in future.
