Is it possible to search for trends over the past year based on category. I would like to see financial and business trends for 2014 but can't seem to figure out where to categorise it.

You could use the adwords keywords tool which shows you the keywords search over the past year - but you'd have to be a bit more specific than 'category' as you mentioned in your post.

Likewise with Google trends you have to have specific terms

This is not true - you can look at Google Trends by category. There are drop downs that allow you to refine the category. It will show you the top search terms in that category and also the overall indexed search trends for the category.
