No Job Prospects, 25 years old

I'm 25, cannot find any kind of job that I would be interested in working in. All my friends are getting jobs in massive companies. I have two degrees and both are useless as neither are areas I ever want to work in. I'm getting seriously depressed so much so that I'm beginning to feel like I'm hopeless. I want to do something in a conflict zone, I'd love to work in a refugee camp but it seems impossible to find vacancies. I don't care about money I've just always wanted to help people. I know what I'm like and I need to be actually invested in the work I'm doing or I do everything half-arsed. (not exactly an employable trait)

I know this is a minor issue compared to some things on here, I am just wondering how to keep the faith that everything will work out? I'm half way to 50 and I've done nothing with my life.

I would have thought that there are stacks of NGOs etc crying out for people?

Try volunteering in your local area. Look at building a reputation in a group you are genuinely interested in.

25 is still very young. Please don't compare your life to your friends .
everyone is different. You know what you're interested in which is the first step.

    Good luck

Have you looked into the Kimmage Institute?
Maybe do an evening course to learn more about development work and make some contacts

Or get into an organisation from the ground even if you don't have the relevant qualification for frontline work

what two degrees have you got, if you became a doctor or a nurse you would be needed everywhere and would be getting paid good money to help people. whilst you might not care about money yourself should you ever have kids and or a sick perant and they need to be provided for you will be glad of "helping" them.

You could teach English is a bad part of the world?

For example, you could teach English in Xinjiang (in conflict infested West China).

Teach English abroad, you'll meet a wholeee lot of different types of people with different careers and you can learn from them. Sounds like you just need to get out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself and you'll start to find the right path you want to take.

I agree with this. If something like humanitarian work is your ultimate goal then do your research and look at the types of roles the big name organisations recruit for- it's everything from healthcare professionals to engineers and technicians! NGOs need volunteers, yes, but an unskilled volunteer is feck all use to them. They need highly skilled professionals who can get on with things with very little supervision, not someone who is well intentioned but hasn't really got anything crucial to offer.

I don't say that to be critical, but humanitarian work is a career path like any other and a perfect role is not going to fall into your lap- learn what the most appealing path to get there is and take the necessary steps towards it, be that re-training, finding voluntary opportunities at home or whatever.

Doctors without Borders, for example, only take certain professionals and even then they have other criteria, such as a second language and a minimum of 3 months spent travelling or working in a deprived part of the world. Those are great things to work towards! Learning a language and going on very different holidays, while in pursuit of a dream career, would be fascinating in itself and would make you a very interesting person to chat to! Nothing worth having comes easy:)
