So my harddrive is seemingly dead. have tried finding it on computer management, different desktops and also a different case and power source. no joy. my next stop was to try find a new sata board for it. is this a lost cause? any advice appriciated.

Try a bootable Linux distro and see if that can pick it up

Try to use something like Clonezilla to create an image of the disk then recover from the image, (providing of course it picks up the disk)
