Hi folks , the missus recently got her timing belt replaced on her car , a 2003 honda civic with 58000 miles on the clock , the lad who fitted it is a friend of her fathers , a mechanic .
After she got it done I asked her if he replaced the water pump at the same time as it's my understanding that this gets done at the same time because if the pump fails the engine is fooked .
She rang him and he said that the pump did not replacing that you don't need to replace it in them cars , is this true or should I get her to get it done anyway .
    Thanks in advance , Sullzz.

What engine is it? Is it saloon or hatch?

    Hi , it's a 1.4s petrol hatchback

That's driven off the timing belt AFAIK, Can't see why he didn't change it tbh, they're not expensive - but labour is if it goes as belt would have to be pretty much redone.

The pump usually gets changed in these when the belt is being done, however it gives little to no trouble in these and your civic has small mileage so I reckon you should be fine until the next change.

If it makes you feel better though then by all means get it done :)

Thanks lads , I might get it done so , I don't understand why he said they don't have to get done on these , he'd look a right fool if the pump did fail , he's usually pretty reliable too.

The correct procedure is to change the pump but he's probly never seen them giving much issues on these, I've seen them do twice that mileage myself without any issue.

Despite that I always used to change it when doing the belt on my own civic for piece of mind

Car is 11 years old, you'd reasonably expect to get another 5 years out of the car. Pump will be 16 years old at that stage.
It'll probably be grand, but if it was my car I'd be raging,

My civic was 16 years old when I done the belt and the original pump was still fine

We have seen Hondas over 200k kms with orgininal water pumps and tensioners (we serviced them since day one).
We normally do the pump and tensioner at the second time changing the timing belt.

BTW the genuine Honda tensioner and pump aren't cheap; both are retailing around the 100 Euro mark.

I've used blueprint on mine without ever having any issue, their stuff seems to be good quality.

just an update on this lads , i have it booked in to get the pump replaced , my thinking is that it would be a shame not to get it done after getting the belt done as it would be my luck for the pump to fail.
Thanks for all your replies and help.
    Sullzz.
