Water for cattle

The field adjacent to the house had no water on it so I full a watering trough from the mains.
Obviously, with water charges coming on tomorrow, this is about to get very expensive.
What are my options here? Can I claim it back or should I look into other solutions than the mains?

If you are registered as a farmer and have an agri connection, all water after household allowance is cheaper than normal household water as you have no waste water charge. I think it works out at less than 50% of household rate. However you have to pay standing charge for the year.

You can also diver water from a flat roof into a few IBC's and put a trough off them this will save a bit of money as well. However you need to switch off mains to get them to use it. Use a bit of lime to keep water clean.

Well, the water comes from a hosepipe which is connected to the house water supply.
Does an agri connection mean a seperate connection to that?

No same connection but an allowance for house and all rest is considered agri. However there is a standing charge that varies from different councils. Depending on you need for the field it may or may not pay you. If standing charge was 100 euro you would need to use about 50 cubic metres for agri use for it to pay you.
