I have a hybrid with wide tyres someone told me I should put thin tyres on it as I only go on the road with it now and would make it much easier to cycle on is this true ?

Not really. However if you have knobbly off-ride tyres then putting on a pair of slicks will improve things. You'd have better grip cornering and a smoother ride, particularly at speed. Bicycle tyres don't need patterns to get grip like car tyres do and knobs on tyres are for gripping into dirt or other soft surfaces.

certainly is. I replaced my heavy hybrid tyres with 28mm Continental Ultra Sport II and they made a huge difference. (I have the garmin stats to prove this too!)

Just be aware that what you gain in speed and easy of cycling you lose in grip in wet conditions.

I wonder what would have happened if you had replaced your heavy hybrid tyres with lighter, more supple wide tyres. Apparently, wider tyres with supple sidewalls running at lower pressure are just as quick and more comfortable. For my next bike, I'm planning to move from 25mm Gatorskins to 35mm Schwalbe Supremes...
