Gearbox falling apart

    Hi guys.
So this ring fell out of my gearbox while driving at the weekend. The car is a Passat b6 tsi 1.4 with the 02u 6speed gearbox.
I was just driving along when I heard two bangs. Pulled over and I see gearbox oil dripping from underneath the car.
Having seen the picture of the exploded view of that gearbox, how did this happen?. I found this ring on the side of the road by chance while ringing for recovery. For this to just fall off, a couple more parts needed to fall off before this could.
It's covered under warranty so gone back to the garage. There is no hole in the gearbox that I could see.
Any ideas how this could happen?

Maybe a dodgy gearbox to begin with? At least it's covered by warranty anyways!

Has it come off the end of the gearbox?

Attached is the exploded view of that gearbox. Part highlighted in yellow.

What I'm wondering is it because of neglect on the part of the garage that sold it to me. I know the gear box linkage/cables were replaced before I got the car. Could they have forgotten to tighten something? It doesn't seem likely as they wouldn't need to go near that side of the box. Either way that's the 4th issue in 4 months of ownership. They can keep the car, I don't want it back.

The gearbox is usually considered a sealed unit. So it wouldn't be serviced internally except for the oil if there was a drain plug fitted. So unless there was a known issue with the box it will be as it left the factory.
