Anyone know of the best place to build/buy a laptop or ultrabook with around a 13 inch screen (up to 14inch would work)

I dont need an operating system as my employer will put windows on it once I have the machine.

Just for word documents and email on the move so dont need much. It wont be used as a main work statation and will never have to do gaming.

    Budget - cheap as possible!!

    Any ideas?

Just wondering did anyone have thoughts on this?

Or is there a different/more suited forum I should ask for it to be moved to?

    Thanks.

    Edit here on.

Saw this on other threads, didn't see it in the stickies but probably just missed it. No sure if it helps for laptops

    1. What is your budget?
Low as possible, its a secondary machine for travel. Dont need any software or OS just the bare machine

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer?
Word docs and email on the move
So ideally so kind of slim laptop/notebook
Ultrabook probably pushes budget too high

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows?
    No.
(so hoping this brings down the cost)

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? [no]

    5. Do you need a monitor? [Laptop]

5a. If yes, what size do you need.

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? No

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [sure- dont know too much about it though]

    8. How can you pay? [Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser]

    9. When are you purchasing? [hopefully as soon as possible]

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? n/a

You really need to provide a budget, even if its only indicative.

Pcspecialist do customised laptops if you want to check it out.

There should be some small laptops around now with those quad core pentiums which would do the job (office docs on the go), and they should be cheaper than the core i based laptops.

There is also a laptop forum here if you dont get any other responses

Budget .... its for throwing around in the bag and on the train.
    So, just for the machine
    this crowd - http://www.refreshedbyus.com/laptops
    and this crew http://www.cheaplaptopcompany.com/

seem to do ones for the €150 to €200 euro mark
I know the machines they have our out a good few years but would still be ok?

Would pcspecialist you mention be the best place to go looking for these?

they'd be dearer than that i'd say.
fyi about PC specialist, the cheap laptops are pretty cheap looking and plasticy.

Have 2 laptops from them, one was 520, other was 680

wish i had spent more on the cheap one, cus the casing is as flimsy.

so if you're throwing it about in a bag, you'd need something a but sturdier :)

In terms of sturdier I was thinking of an older HP thinkpad.
    Are they up to it?

In terms of throwing it about I would be careful enough but just making the point that it will be moved about a good bit.

Can you wait until November? If it is really only something small, light and only for email and word then perhaps the HP Stream would work for you. It's gonna be like an updated netbook and is launching at $200 for 11" and $230 for 13".

Brilliant thanks so much for that.

Would the likes of currys/harvey norman be likely to have this at comparable pricing or would you go amazon? (presume if would be amazon.co.uk as the US have different voltage)

Looks great for the dollar price. However this crowd ( http://www.cnet.com/uk/products/hp-stream-11-6/ )
reckons it will be priced at sterling £179 for the 11" and £199 for the 13"
so it could be expensive by the time it gets to us in euros!!!

Would it be normal for technology to be that much dearer in sterling than dollars?
    the 13" at $230 is around €184
    the 13" at £199 is around €254

    seems excessive?
