Samsung Mini S3 - no option to force 2G only connection

Where I live I have fairly good 2G coverage, but absolutely minimal 3G coverage. Up to now, every phone I had, I just kept it on a 2G (GSM) connection only, as I mostly used wifi for data.
I would manually switch it to 3G if I was out and about and needed the speed.

However, this phone only has the following options:

    - WCDMA/GSM (auto connect)
    - WCDMA only

The phone is clearly trying to connect to the 3G all the time, which is very in and out - which means easily dropping calls and text messages being received long after they were sent.

Anyone any idea how if there is an easy-ish way to get this to use 2G only?
