Alba Saorview box doesnt recognise USB hard drive

I've been using an Alba B660 Saorview box with a USB stick for the last while without (much) problem. I just bought a 1TB Toshiba USB hard drive to replace the stick. But, it doesn't seem to be recognised by the STB. I reformatted the drive as FAT32, but still no luck. Any idea what the problem might be? The drive works fine connected to a laptop. Thanks!

Thanks plodder, I was just about to start a thread about exactly the same issue.

My 1TB Toshiba hard drive worked perfectly for a few weeks but now the device isn't being recognised by the Saorview box but works perfectly with my laptop.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That's very strange. Just so I understand, you're saying it worked on the Saorview box for a few weeks, but stopped working then, but still works on the laptop?

I had thought my problem might be power related. USB 3.0 devices can in theory demand more power than an older USB port can deliver. But, I think that's not the problem in this case. I think the problem is more likely software related on my cheapo box.

Did you by any chance connect the drive to a laptop for the first time after it was working for a while on the saorview box? Also, what is the make of the Saorview box?

Yeah, it was working away with the (Finlux) Saorview box for a few weeks and then it stopped working (i.e the drive was no longer recognised).

When I connect the device to my laptop it is recognised immediately.

Have you tried the box with a USB stick? I think if I were you I'd bring the box back to the shop seeing as it did work before, but isn't now (assuming it's still in warranty).

Maybe bring the hard-drive as well, and they can check if it's a power issue between the two.
