Lifting hose to get more petrol out ?

First time I've ever seen a person do this yesterday.

Guy after filling his car, pulled more hose out of the machine and lifted it high over his head. I presume he was doing this trying to get more petrol out of the hose and into his car.

Does anyone else actually do this and does this actually work ? Seems a bit lousy as the next person to fill up will be getting less petrol than they purchased ?

I do it all the time. Definitely get some out. Might only be a few hundred ml but it's fuel that's been pumped and so I'll be paying for it whether I drain it or not.

What about the petrol left in the hose from the previous person. You didn't pay for that.

And how much hose do you pull out. Do you pull out the entire length of it to get it all out ?

The valve is at the end of the hose, so when you are not "pulling the trigger" nothing will come out of the hose. So you can lift it over your head all you like you are, only getting the petrol in the nozzle not in the hose.

Highly doubt if this will make any difference as the flow is controlled and closed by the nozzle in your hand. You may get a bit out of the nozzle but whats in the hose stayes in there, otherwise you would potentially have petrol flowing if the nozzle was dropped.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. :D

I bet that guy doesn't use his indicators to save electricity.

Same people who drive miles out of their way to save a penny a litre? Or who queue to get onto a forecourt on budget night, sitting there burning more than they'll save...

    :D

    this,

    because of this.

it's like leaving the tank 1/4 full in a hire car. the last person left the pump full right to the nozzle and thanks to the cut off, you leave i full to the nozzle too.

i'm sure if you jiggle it you might get a bit more petrol that's otherwise clinging on by miniscal tension inside the nozzle or whatever but i doubt you're getting anything worth talking about.

If you do that too much on the forecourt you could get arrested

You would be lucky to fill an egg cup.

    Soooooo?

No I don't any more out, I just lift whatever's out up, and the nozzle upside down. Like I said wouldn't fill a coke bottle, but would probably fill a small cup.

You wouldn't fill a thimble. All you are getting is the last dribble in the nozzle.

? You've never seen queues like petrol would never be sold again on budget night.

Although who am I to laugh, half considering washing 3 cars before Wednesday as some kind useless pre water charges gesture.

I see now, the night of the budget :) They probably waste more petrol driving to the forecourt than what they are saving

The same people more than likely boot it out of the forecourt up to the first set of traffic lights :D

Meh, could be a thimble, could be a small cup. I've had some let out more than others, and it takes 2 seconds, why wouldn't I. Never turned the milk carton upside down to get the last drop?

Yes. ...but I've never discovered anything more than that last drop.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,341 ✭✭✭El Horseboxo

I only jiggle it a bit to stop the drops so I get nothing on the paintwork. Nothing to do with an extra spoonful of fuel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,433 ✭✭✭NomadicGray

Turn the nozzle upside down so the petrol goes in the car and not on the car, under no illusion that im getting anything more than drops in there.

i bet he uses candles in the living room too.

tbh, i doubt this technique is any use at all, would just gather some unwanted eyes if anything.

On a prepay pump that cuts off after x amount of fuel you might still get some through the hose by holding the trigger and lifting it.

But then again it would be less than half a litre and is it worth 70 cent to look like a complete tool

Nozzle upside down does me grand

You'd probably save far more petrol by ensuring your tyres are kept at the correct pressure, if you were so inclined.

What's all this nozzle upside down business? How does rotating a tube relase more drips?

I tap the thing a couple o times just to make sure I don't get drips on me paintwork.

As for the lad that pulls the entire hose out, that's just pure comedy. Not because he's tight, but because he's wrong.

Working in a fuel station I see a lot of weird crap that people do to get that extra 5c out, it can look ridiculous.

I don't turn the nozzle upside down to get more out of it, i turn it upside down to stop petrol dripping on my lovely paint work. I'm sure most people are the same. Although if you happen to have tar or paint on your car right below the fuel cap then let petrol drip all over it lol.
