Just had my first homework assignment there and it went pretty well.

Kind of finding it hard to get an answer on this from lecturers or anyone really.
So, you have to pass continuous assessment portion of modules in science at NUIG or your screwed, regardless of how well both semester exams go. thats all clear and fine.

Now, for example, in my course. lets say for Maths module (MA161 yuck) the CA is worth 30% of the overall module at years end. Does that mean if i get the whole 30% in CA (aka just homework assignments really), then i'll only be needing 10% to pass the module? so, simply get 10% from either semester 1 or 2 exams and i pass the module entirely even if i fail both math papers miserably (a legit concern)

does the same also go for physics?

    thanks all

I don't know about NUIG specifically, but I would think that the answer is yes.

Your CA grades can bring up your overall grade to a pass if you marginally fail the main exam.

Be aware if you get full marks in CA (worth 30% in this case) and a 10% result in the exam, that 10% is only worth 7% overall, as the exam is only 70% of the module, so in that case you would end up with 37% and still fail.

You'd want to be getting about 20% in the exam (14% overall) to pass.

It differs from module to module. Some require to pass both the CA and the exam, while others allow you to pass if you fail the exam but the CA brings you to a pass. Some also let you leave out the CA if it brings your overall mark down.

For MA161, if you check the module page, the lecturer has an FAQ on this. You need 35% in the CA to complete the year. You can fail both papers individually but if you get an average of over 40% between the papers and CA, you'll pass. If you fail the whole module, you need to repeat both papers. There's also links regarding passing by compensation.

If you're having difficulty with the maths content, go into SUMS in Aras de Brun and they'll be able to help you out.

Physics, I'm not sure, the best person to talk to would be Tess, the school secretary. Either send her an email (better option) or pop into her. Her office is in the corridor where the first year labs are. It can change every year depending on who's teaching it.

    Thanks guys.
Yeah, the maths and physics are tough going at the moment alright but they were kind of forced on me this year so what can you do?

The plan is to be dropping both next year but second year seems a long ways away at the moment.

Id reckon i could get maybe 30 ish % from semester 1 maths paper alright and the same from physics. The semester 2 papers look mental altogether though.

Best find out about the physics too, if both papers have to be passed in that then im screwed :pac: even though Mark Lang is a totally cool lecturer :)
