Hi folks - wondering what folks think about buying a 2011 VW Passat Diesel CC GT with approx 90k miles on it. It's a one owner company car in great condition. It ticks all the boxes for me except mileage which has me nervous. We do about 10k per year. Is this a big risk re mileage? Also a little concerned about selling it on in 3-5 years. There seem to be plenty out there with 140/150k on them now and still asking for decent money. Thoughts?

    Thanks.

    I wouldn't consider 30k a year massive miles for a diesel.

If your only doing 10k a year is it even worth your while getting a diesel?

I would be more concerned about buying a diesel when you are only doing 10k a year. Modern diesels don't respond well to low milage and can lead to some costly issues down the lines with DPF problems. The other lads here would have more tech knowledge so hopefully they will shed more light.

That mileage would be about normal for a 3 year old UK ex fleet/company car. I bought my 2011 CC GT over a year ago and it had only 35k verified miles on it but that was privately owned as opposed to ex fleet/company owned.

Thanks. I've always had diesel cars even though I have never put huge mileage on them. Better selection when buying and a wider market when selling, at least that's how I have thought about it. However I didn't know there was a risk of damage if not putting up big miles so that's interesting.

The main issue with diesels and low milage seems to be DPF issues. It basically acts as a filter to remove soot and other contaminants from exhaust gas. It regenerates or clears itself through engine heat if I am correct. If you are only doing short journeys the DPF never has a chance to regenerate and eventually clogs. Google DPF issues and you will see plenty of info on it.

It isn't the level of miles that cause issues with DPFs - its the type of driving you do.

If the 10 k miles a year is all done on motorways - that should be no problem from a DPF viewpoint.

Its short journeys and/or driving around towns all the time that causes the DPF issues.

Basically - my understanding is that if car used for short journeys all the time - it doesn't get to regenerate as its supposed to - and that's where the issues happen

Thanks, the 10k we do is very much a mixture of short spins around town and longer motorway (70km ish) spins.
