NCT when car is declared off the road

    Quick question.

    My car is due an nct in January. It is currently declared off the road.

    Will I get a letter to nct it in January and if I don't do it and keep it declared off the road will I get a full year nct when I do bring it in for an NCT.

    I don't think you will get any letter in relation to NCT. I don't think they send them anymore.

    Anyway - if car is due NCT in January, you can do it up to 3 months in advance, so you will probably be able to test it very soon.
    You can drive a car to NCT centre and back, even though it's declared off the road.

    Unfortunately if you don't do NCT before due date but later, then you won't get a full year (or two).
    I.e. if you return your car to the road in May 2015, and only NCT it then, you will only get your NCT valid until January 2016 (or 2017) depending on vehicle age). Stupid system, but that's what it is.

    First off you probably won't get a renewal letter, it's very rare to get one nowadays.
    As for your main question. If you let the NCT expire you will only get an NCT which would expire on the next anniversary of 1st registration.
    When does the current NCT expire and what year is the car ?
    I'm guessing it's over 10 years old as you mention a full year' rather than 2 years.
    In that case you would get an NCT up until the same day/month that the current one expires/expired.

    The new system whereby you can elect to do the test early is only for cars which have a current NCT Cert.

    So what would happen if the nct expires in January 2015. I keep the car declared off the road until 2017 and then nct it ? I assume you would get a one year nct then ?

    The car is 2001.

    Yep. You would get an NCT until Jan 2018, regardless of when in 2017 you tested it.

    edit; except if you NCT'd it within 3 months of the next NCT due date....that would give you 12 months from the next due date.
    eg. test passed in November 2017 would give a cert expiring Jan 2019

    If you tested it within next due date range(up to 3 months in advance), than you get it for another year.

    I.e. say your car is due NCT 15th January 2015 (I'm just guessing).
    So if you don't NCT it in January and let NCT lapse, and then only go for NCT after 15th October 2015, then you will get a NCT cert valid until 15th January 2017.
